Industrial Wastewater Testing UAE

Treated food factory effluent prepared for approved non-potable reuse

Industrial Wastewater Testing UAE: What to Analyse Before ETP Design

Two factories can discharge the same volume of wastewater but require completely different treatment plants. Food-processing water may contain biodegradable organic matter, while metal-finishing effluent may contain oils or metals.

For this reason, industrial wastewater testing UAE projects should begin with representative sampling, relevant laboratory analysis and reliable flow data. This information helps engineers choose the correct treatment stages, estimate pollutant loads and prepare a more accurate Effluent Treatment Plant proposal.

Why One Wastewater Sample May Not Be Enough

Industrial effluent can change throughout the working day. A sample collected during quiet production may be very different from wastewater discharged during equipment washing, clean-in-place cycles, product changeovers or batch emptying.

If the sample does not represent normal and peak conditions, the plant may be designed using incomplete information. This can lead to insufficient equalisation, unstable treatment, membrane fouling or inconsistent water quality.

Before sampling, identify:

  • Every production process that generates wastewater
  • Cleaning and washdown schedules
  • Batch discharges and product changes
  • Average and peak wastewater flow
  • Oily, concentrated, acidic or alkaline streams
  • Domestic sewage and stormwater connections
  • The proposed discharge or water-reuse destination

Some streams can be treated together, while others may require segregation and separate pretreatment.

Grab Samples and Composite Samples

grab sample represents wastewater at one location and one moment. It is useful for checking a distinct batch, cleaning discharge or rapidly changing condition.

composite sample combines samples collected over a defined period or in proportion to flow. It can provide a better picture of the average wastewater entering the treatment plant.

Many factories need both approaches: composite sampling for typical loading and targeted grab samples for unusual discharges. Agree sampling locations, containers, preservation and holding times with the laboratory before collection. One improvised container should not be used for every test.

Core Industrial Wastewater Test Parameters

The following parameters are a useful starting point, but they are not a universal test package for every industry.

ParameterWhat It ShowsWhy It Matters
pHAcidity or alkalinityExtreme or variable pH may require neutralisation and can affect biological treatment.
TemperatureWastewater temperature at samplingHigh temperature can affect treatment, equipment and sample results.
BOD5Mainly biodegradable organic load under the test conditionsHelps estimate biological loading and aeration needs.
CODChemically oxidisable matterIndicates a broader organic load, including material that may not be readily biodegradable.
TSSSuspended particlesInfluences settling, flotation, filtration, sludge production and membrane protection.
TDS or conductivityDissolved salts and ionic contentSalts are not removed by ordinary clarification or biological treatment and may affect reuse.
Oil and greaseOily contaminantsOil can interfere with biological systems and membranes and may require pretreatment.
Nitrogen and phosphorusNutrient loadingRelevant to biological-process design and some outlet requirements.

Industry-specific testing may also be needed. Food factories may require detailed oil and grease analysis. Metal-processing facilities may need tests for chemicals used onsite. Textile wastewater can require colour, surfactant and salinity assessment. Pharmaceutical or chemical wastewater may need specialist analysis and treatability testing.

Do Not Select MBR from COD Alone

COD shows the quantity of chemically oxidisable material, but it does not prove that the wastewater is biologically treatable. A stream can have high COD because of biodegradable product residue, poorly biodegradable compounds or chemicals that inhibit microorganisms.

The relationship between BOD and COD can indicate biodegradability, but it should not be the only design input. Oil, solvents, metals, extreme pH or salinity may require segregation, physicochemical pretreatment or a treatability study.

Laboratory Results Must Be Combined with Flow Data

Concentration is only part of the design basis. Engineers also need to calculate the daily pollutant load:

Load (kg/day) = concentration (mg/L) × flow (m³/day) ÷ 1,000

Provide average daily flow, maximum daily flow, peak hourly flow, batch volume, discharge duration, operating shifts and planned production growth. Water-meter records and a simple hourly discharge profile are more useful than estimating wastewater solely from the total water bill.

Define the Treated-Water Destination First

The treatment process depends on whether the final water will enter a sewer, be removed offsite, be discharged under an approved permit or be reused for a specific non-potable application.

Industrial wastewater requirements can vary by emirate, municipality, free-zone authority, receiving operator, permit and reuse objective. Do not copy a numerical table from another project and call it a single UAE standard. Confirm the applicable outlet criteria before final process design.

Common Wastewater Sampling Mistakes

Avoid these problems when requesting an ETP proposal:

  1. Collecting only clean rinse water
  2. Ignoring production and cleaning cycles
  3. Mixing unrelated streams in the sample bottle
  4. Using the wrong container or testing the sample too late
  5. Providing concentrations without wastewater-flow data
  6. Ordering only a generic laboratory package
  7. Failing to define the discharge or reuse objective

What to Send with an Industrial ETP Enquiry

Along with the laboratory report, provide:

  • Facility location and responsible authority
  • Products, production process and operating schedule
  • Wastewater sources and existing stream segregation
  • Average, peak and batch-flow information
  • Cleaning chemicals and relevant safety data sheets
  • Required discharge or reuse quality
  • Available plot, tanks, utilities and site drawings
  • Expected future production or capacity changes

This information allows Almasa to determine whether the project needs physical separation, chemical treatment, biological treatment, membranes, polishing or a combination within an industrial wastewater treatment solution and effluent treatment plant.

From Testing to a Reliable Treatment Concept

Testing does not select a treatment plant automatically. It helps engineers connect wastewater composition with flow, production conditions, site constraints and the required outlet quality.

Better input data produces a more reliable treatment concept, clearer quotation and lower risk of costly design changes after installation.

If your facility needs a new industrial ETP or an existing ETP upgrade, send Almasa your laboratory report, flow data, production details and intended discharge or reuse objective.

What tests are needed before designing an industrial ETP?

A typical starting panel includes pH, temperature, BOD, COD, TSS, TDS or conductivity, oil and grease, and relevant nutrients. Additional tests should be selected from the facility’s production processes and chemicals.

Often, no. Multiple or composite samples may be needed to represent normal production, cleaning cycles, batch discharges and peak conditions.

Not necessarily. COD does not show whether the load is biodegradable or inhibitory. Pretreatment or treatability testing may be needed before selecting a biological process.

No. Requirements can vary according to the emirate, authority, receiving system, permit, discharge route and intended reuse application.
