The Department of Energy Abu Dhabi sent a delegation to Almasa Environmental Solutions on 22 September 2026 to see our MBR, MBBR and RO water treatment technologies up close. The visit included a presentation, a discussion with our leadership and engineering team, and a tour of our facility.
A Warm Welcome and Our Company Story
The day began in our corridor gallery, where our team walked the guests through Almasa’s journey since 2006, from our first projects to more than 600 installations across the GCC. The photos on these walls show the plants, people and partners that have shaped our work in water and wastewater treatment.
We then moved to the meeting room for a presentation for the Department of Energy Abu Dhabi team on who we are, the clients we serve, and how our systems help industries, communities and developers across the UAE reuse water instead of wasting it.
3 Technologies the Department of Energy Abu Dhabi Delegation Reviewed
Our team explained the three core technologies behind our treatment plants:
1. MBR (Membrane Bioreactor)
MBR combines biological treatment with membrane filtration. Our Monyin® hollow fibre membranes have pores of about 100 nanometres, which hold back suspended solids and bacteria and produce clear, high-quality treated water suitable for reuse in irrigation, cooling and other applications. Almasa is the first company in the UAE to manufacture MBR systems locally. Learn more about our MBR technology.
2. MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor)
MBBR uses thousands of small plastic carriers that move freely in the aeration tank. Bacteria grow on the surface of each carrier and break down the pollutants in the water. Because the carriers give the bacteria so much surface area, MBBR plants are compact, stable and simple to operate, which makes them a strong choice for new sewage treatment plants and upgrades. 3. RO (Reverse Osmosis)
RO pushes water through a very fine membrane under pressure, removing dissolved salts, minerals and other impurities. It is used for desalination, for producing high-purity process water, and as a polishing step after biological treatment when treated water must meet the strictest standards. Touring Our Facility
After the presentation, the guests from the Department of Energy Abu Dhabi toured our site. They checked our MBBR and RO systems, saw our manufacturing and workshop areas, and spoke directly with the engineers and technicians who design, build and commission our plants.
The tour gave the delegation a practical view of how our systems are assembled and tested before they are delivered to site, and how local manufacturing helps shorten delivery times and simplify after-sales support for our clients. Our team also answered questions about operation and maintenance, energy use, and how our plants perform in the UAE’s hot climate.
Why This Visit Matters
The Department of Energy Abu Dhabi helps shape policy for the emirate’s energy and water sector. Visits like this give government and industry a chance to share ideas, understand the technologies available locally, and work together towards more efficient and sustainable water use. For Almasa, it was also a valuable chance to hear the delegation’s feedback and understand the priorities that matter most to the sector.
Treating wastewater so that it can be reused reduces the demand for desalinated water and the energy needed to produce it. Technologies such as MBR, MBBR and RO make that reuse possible at every scale, from a single building to a full municipal plant.
